MedPROACT protects coastal communities by restoring seagrass meadows
MedPROACT, while building adaptation plans together with the local communities and administrations, will consider the consequences of losing seagrass meadows in the pilot sites involved (Italy, Turkey and Tunisia): increased erosion, biodiversity loss and the consequent decline in fisheries resources, worsening of water quality and enhanced exposure to climate change. These effects are all connected to local socioeconomical conditions: protecting Posidonia oceanica means protecting coastal communities' survival.

The El Bibane Lagoon, located near Zarzis in southern Tunisia - the country's largest coastal lagoon, an unvaluable coastal wetland ecologically unique and home to a diverse array of commercially valuable fish and shrimp. MedPROACT will implement its activities in 10 pilot areas spread across the Mediterranean Sea, in all the four countries represented in the project. Türkiye, through project partner The Mediterranean Fisheries Research, Production and Training Institute, hosts one pilot site, where on the 10th of February the project’s launch event and the first meeting of the Local Working Group on Climate Change Adaptation will take place.
