About – Nature based solutions for climate resilient Mediterranean cities

Extreme weather events represent one of the primary climate risks in the Mediterranean, with urban areas, where the majority of the population resides, being exceptionally vulnerable due to a combination of densely built spaces, impervious surfaces, and high population density. Furthermore, the growing intensity and frequency of these events (a direct result of climate change) makes conventional infrastructure (such as drainage systems), on which current climate resilience approaches are largely dependent, increasingly inadequate.
To address this common challenge, nature-based solutions represent a scalable, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable approach with increasing popularity worldwide, yet with limited applications in the Mediterranean.
NBS4MED aspires to transform urban climate adaptation strategies in the Mediterranean by advancing the adoption of nature-based solutions (NBS) and their broad integration in urban climate resilience planning.
