About – Mediterranean Joint Initiative for Climate Adaptation and Risk Prevention

The Eastern Mediterranean faces significant challenges due to climate change, with rising sea temperatures, increased salinity, and invasive species affecting ecosystems, fisheries, and tourism. The project focuses on establishing a cost-effective, sustainable multiplatform observing system in the region to enhance climate resilience and adaptation. By combining High-Frequency Radars (HFRs), coastal observatories, and in-situ sensors, the system will provide comprehensive 3D data on sea conditions at multiple scales. This system will improve situational awareness, maritime safety, and disaster resilience while supporting joint cross-border efforts to address climate change impacts. It aims to bridge the gap in monitoring capabilities, empowering participating countries (Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta and Tunisia) to develop innovative climate adaptation and risk prevention solutions.
