Following the initial institutional meeting with the mayor of Les Masies de Roda, the MEDWISE team from the BETA Technological Centre (UVic‑UCC) carried out a first diagnostic visit to the municipality’s decentralised composting model. This time, the focus was on day‑to‑day operation: joining the municipal workers on their regular route, observing how the system is managed in practice and discussing concrete operational issues from their perspective.

During the visit, the team followed the entire circuit of the decentralised system, visiting the various community composting sites distributed throughout the municipality. Municipal staff explained their routine tasks, including how the composters are loaded and mixed, how the machinery used to turn and homogenize the material operates, and how they monitor the general conditions of the sites.

The workers also shared the main challenges they encounter, such as the presence of inorganic waste in some composters, the use of plastic bags by residents for organic waste, and the presence of flies during warmer months, among others. At the same time, they highlighted the system’s evolution since its implementation and pointed out specific improvements that have already been implemented over the years.

For the MEDWISE team, this on-site exchange was essential to move from general descriptions to a more detailed understanding of the actual operation of a decentralised and consolidated community composting system. The observations and insights gathered during the visit will help identify where the technical recommendations derived from BETA’s composting experience can be useful, always in dialogue with the municipality and leveraging the knowledge of the staff who manage the system daily.

In the next steps, the Beta team will use the information collected during this diagnostic visit to define concrete actions for the municipality, including changes to information records, simple follow-up recommendations, and a list of realistic adjustments to the existing decentralized system. These activities not only support the municipality in optimising its system but also contribute practical insights that may inspire other Mediterranean communities exploring decentralised composting models.
