Youth Perspectives on Mediterranean Water Challenges and Solutions highlighted on World Water Day

In celebration of World Water Day on March 22nd 2024, Interreg NEXT MED hosted a thought-provoking webinar focusing on Mediterranean water challenges. Enriched by the participation of young people, the online dialogue delved into critical issues and potential solutions, shedding light on the complexities of water management in the region.

The event was co-organized with EU Neighbours South, and several EU JEEL Connectors were involved directly in the moderation. EU JEEL Connectors is a network of young individuals across the Southern Neighbourhood region, led by inspiring young changemakers from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia.

The discussion identified the top five water challenges encountered by Mediterranean households:

  1. Water pollution and contamination due to waste
  2. Lack of awareness and communication on water issues
  3. No integrated approach between water and other sectors
  4. Underuse of technology applied to water in households
  5. Water anxiety that leads to uncontrolled consumption

In response, the webinar highlighted five potential solutions tailored to Mediterranean households:

  1. Communication actions to inform on the actual impact of water consumption
  2. Developing Water Skills in (high) education
  3. Better explain and explore how we can use grey waters
  4. Apply sustainable Nature-Based Solutions
  5. Track the household’s water footprint

While these solutions represent meaningful steps towards addressing water challenges in Mediterranean households, it is important to recognize that they are not exhaustive. Continued collaboration, innovation, and commitment are essential for achieving sustainable water management goals in the region.

Through initiatives like this webinar, stakeholders are encouraged to engage in dialogue, share knowledge, and collectively work towards a future where water is managed responsibly, ensuring the well-being of both current and future generations in the Mediterranean region.
