WISEMED’s national workshop in Amman brings together experts to advance sustainable irrigation and water management in Jordan.
The WISEMED – MEDiterranean joint Water management and conservatIon SustainablE solutions project, funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme and coordinated by Istituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria (ICU), held its National Co-Creation Workshop on 16 February 2026 at Signia by Hilton Amman. Organized by the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC), the event brought together representatives from government institutions, research organizations, the private sector, and development partners to support the preparation of a National Action Plan for Sustainable Irrigation Water Management in Jordan.
The workshop began with participant registration, followed by welcoming remarks from NARC and donor representatives. The Director General of NARC emphasized the importance of improving irrigation water efficiency and promoting sustainable solutions to address Jordan’s water scarcity challenges.
Participants were introduced to the WISEMED project through a presentation and an introductory video explaining its objectives and its role in supporting sustainable and integrated water management across the Mediterranean region. The project focuses on promoting innovative and cost-effective solutions to improve water efficiency, enhance climate resilience, and support farmers.
During the technical session, advanced irrigation and water management technologies were presented, including subsurface irrigation, fertigation, mulching, soil moisture retention polymers, ultrasonic treatment, and sensor-based irrigation monitoring and decision support systems, all with strong potential to improve irrigation efficiency in Jordan.
In the participatory session, participants worked in groups to discuss how these solutions can be applied locally, identifying priorities, evaluating feasibility, and proposing key actions for the National Action Plan.
The workshop concluded with a summary of main recommendations and outlined next steps for developing the National Action Plan and preparing for the next workshop.
This event represents an important step toward improving sustainable irrigation management and strengthening water security in Jordan.
