The National Co-creation Workshop of the WISEMED project – MEDiterranean joint Water management and conservatIon SustainablE solutions, funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme and coordinated by the Istituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria (ICU), was held in Hammamet, Tunisia, from 5 to 7 February.

The workshop was organised by the Tunisian project partner Centre de Recherches et des Technologies des Eaux (CERTE), with the participation of the project partner Institut National de Recherches en Génie Rural, Eaux et Forêts (INRGREF).

During the event, participants discussed and validated innovative approaches for sustainable water management in Mediterranean agriculture. Two key solutions were presented and selected for further consideration:

  • Mixing conventional water (CW) and non-conventional water (NCW) using low-cost sensors
  • The use of salt-tolerant crops

In collaboration with CERTE and INRGREF, participants explored how these solutions can contribute to optimising water use, while generating both environmental and economic benefits and ensuring scalability and sustainability.

The workshop included Q&A sessions and an open discussion involving a wide range of stakeholders from the water and agriculture sectors. Researchers, farmers, NGOs, public institutions, and universities exchanged views on the advantages, challenges, and potential impacts of the proposed solutions.

This event represented a valuable opportunity for knowledge sharing among Tunisian stakeholders, as well as for collecting feedback to support the refinement and future implementation of innovative water management solutions in agriculture.

The transfer of scientific knowledge, the exchange of institutional and technical best practices among partners, and the development of context-specific sustainable solutions for pilot areas are key pillars of the WISEMED project.

Overall, the workshop marked an important step forward in fostering collaboration among stakeholders and advancing practical, sustainable solutions that can contribute to more efficient and resilient water management in the Mediterranean region.
