On December 18, in Rome, WISEMED participated in the National Training Day dedicated to project management for partners of the 59 projects awarded under the first call of the Interreg NEXT MED Programme. The event offered a valuable opportunity for project teams to gain practical guidance and align with programme procedures.

The training was organized by the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, in partnership with Regione Puglia, Italy’s National Contact Point, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and hosted at the Regione Lazio headquarters. It aimed to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge on project management, monitoring, reporting, and financial compliance, ensuring smooth and effective implementation of all awarded projects.

During the session, participants explored several key aspects of project management, including:

  • The national control system for Italian beneficiaries, focusing on expenditure verification, quality controls, and procedures to ensure compliance with Programme requirements;
  • The main financial rules of the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, including eligible costs and reporting obligations;
  • The reporting procedure, which supports transparency and accuracy in documenting project activities and expenditures.

For the WISEMED project, the training was attended by the project’s Lead Partner, ICU – Istituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria and the Italian partner CREA-Consiglio per la ricerca in agricoltura e l’analisi dell’economia agraria. ICU is an Italian non-governmental organization with extensive experience in international cooperation and development projects, particularly in water management and environmental sustainability. Within WISEMED, ICU coordinates project management, operational implementation, and partner engagement, ensuring smooth execution of activities across countries. CREA is the national institution for agriculture research and economy in Italy. Leveraging its strong expertise in research, pilot actions, and policy development, CREA implements pilot actions and coordinates the project’s policy improvement activities in Italy.

The National Training Days also allowed participants to share experiences and exchange best practices with other Italian project partners. For the WISEMED team, this interaction was a valuable opportunity to better understand programme expectations, reinforce administrative and financial capacities, and strengthen collaboration within the Mediterranean project network.

The training represents an important step in the successful implementation of WISEMED, which focuses on the sustainable management of water resources in the Mediterranean region. By attending these sessions, the project team can ensure compliance with programme rules while preparing to achieve tangible results in water efficiency, resource management, and regional cooperation.

With the support of the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, WISEMED continues to develop innovative and collaborative activities, contributing to sustainable water management and cross-border cooperation across the Mediterranean. Further training sessions for partners in other countries will continue to reinforce knowledge sharing and capacity building within the programme network.
