The SMARTMED Project will be officially presented in Tunisia on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, during an Information Day to be held at the Golden Tulip El Mechtel Hotel in Tunis. The event will bring together local authorities, public institutions, businesses, NGOs, civil society organisations and experts active in the field of smart cities across Tunisia.
Co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, SMARTMED (2025–2028) is a transnational cooperation project involving Greece, Jordan and Tunisia, aimed at supporting Mediterranean cities in their transition towards smart, sustainable, inclusive and people-centred urban environments.
The project is coordinated by the University of Western Macedonia (UOWM, Greece), in partnership with the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development (iED, Greece), the Municipality of Deir Alla (Jordan) and BUSINESSMED (Tunisia). With a total budget of €1,133,180, SMARTMED promotes innovative digital solutions to improve urban governance, environmental protection, resource efficiency and quality of life for citizens.
SMARTMED focuses on empowering public authorities to adopt intelligent digital systems through the establishment of local innovation hubs, online platforms for sharing good practices, and pilot applications in key sectors such as e-health and smart energy. The project also supports capacity building, transnational cooperation and knowledge exchange among Mediterranean stakeholders.
Beyond the presentation of the SMARTMED project and its action plan, the Information Day in Tunis will serve as a common space for dialogue between municipalities, public authorities, universities, NGOs and private sector representatives. Discussions will focus on the opportunities and challenges of implementing smart city solutions in Tunisia, and on how digital innovation can contribute to more responsive, resilient and sustainable urban management.
Ultimately, SMARTMED seeks to redefine how Mediterranean cities address sustainability, waste management and public health, contributing to a broader Mediterranean strategy for technologically, socially and environmentally smart cities.
