Every 28 November, the Day of the Mediterranean invites institutions and citizens across the region to recognise our shared identity, common heritage and the importance of cooperation between both shores of the sea.

On this occasion, the Sludge2Energy partnership joins the celebration by highlighting how innovative solutions in wastewater and sludge management can contribute to a more sustainable Mediterranean.

Every day, wastewater treatment plants across the region generate large volumes of sewage sludge, whose management is often costly and environmentally challenging. At the same time, Mediterranean countries are rich in solar energy, a resource that can help turn this problem into an opportunity.

Co-funded by the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, Sludge2Energy is testing a new approach: using solar energy to dry sewage sludge and then converting it through pyrolysis into local energy and biochar. Pilot sites in Cyprus, Jordan and Türkiye will demonstrate how this circular model can:

  • reduce the environmental footprint of sludge management,
  • produce on-site energy for treatment plants,
  • generate biochar that can improve soils and lock carbon away,
  • support operators, authorities and farmers in making informed decisions for their territories.

By linking cleaner water, smarter resource use and cross-border cooperation, Sludge2Energy contributes to the broader vision behind the Day of the Mediterranean: a region that is more resilient, sustainable and united in action.
