Bringing renewable energy into historic environments was at the heart of one of the most engaging discussions during the first 2026 gathering of the Lebanon Member Committee of the World Energy Council (WEC)—a global network of energy leaders working to promote sustainable energy worldwide (http://www.worldenergy.org). Held on 26 February 2026 at the Gefinor Rotana Hotel in Beirut, the gathering brought together around 50 participants, including WEC Lebanon members, energy professionals, and representatives from key institutions, to exchange on pressing energy challenges and opportunities.
Within this context, Session 2, moderated by Dr. Joseph Al Assad, focused on “Renewable Energy in Historic Sites” and featured a presentation by Ms. Ghada Daouk from the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC) on the EU co-funded SHAREN project. The project aims to integrate renewable energy solutions into Mediterranean historic centers, with pilot projects in Anjar and Byblos, demonstrating how clean energy can be deployed while preserving cultural heritage.
The session sparked valuable discussion on balancing conservation with innovation, a particularly relevant challenge for Lebanon. More broadly, the gathering—held under the theme “New Horizons for Financing: Exploring the Donors’ Appetite”—served as an important platform to connect stakeholders and discuss key developments in the sector, including EU support to Lebanon’s energy transition, the draft Energy Efficiency Law, updates on the IM Solar Fund, and preparations for upcoming milestones such as the Lebanon Grand Energy Event and the World Energy Congress in Riyadh.
