On 15-16 December 2025, the EU-funded Interreg NEXT MED project MEDSHIFTGREEN officially kicked off at the University of Macedonia, bringing together partners from across the Mediterranean region. The initiative aims to transform green education by integrating practical, hands-on approaches to address shared environmental challenges.

Under the theme “Cultivating Green Innovators,” this three-year project (until October 2028) focuses on equipping Mediterranean youth with the skills needed to develop sustainable solutions. The consortium includes the University of Macedonia (Greece), Lebanese Development Network (Lebanon), Kizanlikli Academy (Turkey), and the Center for Social Innovation (Cyprus).

The project plans to establish Interactive Green Labs and Green Skills Bootcamps- collaborative spaces where students, educators, and communities co-create solutions like water-saving systems and circular economy models. The goal is to bridge the gap between theory and practice, fostering a new generation of “green innovators” ready to tackle the region’s environmental issues.

According to Dr. Jason Papathanasiou, Lead Coordinator, “Our region faces water scarcity, coastal erosion, and other environmental pressures. MEDSHIFTGREEN believes youth are crucial partners in building resilience and creating sustainable change today, not just tomorrow.”

The launch marks the start of a journey focusing on capacity building, curriculum co-design, and cross-border cooperation, with key milestones including skills gap analysis and pilot Green Labs programs.
