The institute will contribute on the improvement of marine radar technologies
The Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA) is Italy’s national environmental research body, operating under the Ministry for the Environment. It supports scientific research, environmental monitoring, and policy development for sustainable management of natural and marine resources. Within the Mediterranean Joint Initiative for Climate Adaptation and Risk Prevention (MedJICARP), ISPRA contributes its long-standing expertise in operational oceanography, coastal monitoring, and data standardisation.
ISPRA is actively involved in several project work packages, particularly in WP5. Under WP5, ISPRA leads actions to strengthen capacity building, knowledge sharing, especially on radar Hf technology, and stakeholder engagement. This includes hosting visiting researchers or students in Rome or at HF radar installation sites, providing hands-on training in marine monitoring technologies and data analysis.
Through its participation, ISPRA aims to improve transnational cooperation and harmonisation of ocean data collection and analysis, promoting interoperability across Mediterranean observing systems. Expected outcomes include the establishment of a shared sea state monitoring framework, enhanced capacity of regional institutions to cope with climate-related hazards, and better-informed policies for coastal resilience.
ISPRA’s involvement will contribute to advancing data sharing, developing best practices for environmental monitoring, and fostering the next generation of scientists equipped to tackle climate adaptation challenges in the Mediterranean region.
