The Oceanography Malta Research Group (OMRG), within the Department of Geosciences at the University of Malta, focuses on the study of physical ocean processes in the central Mediterranean, with particular attention to coastal dynamics, climate change impacts, and applications that support marine safety and sustainable marine management. Over the years, the research group has developed strong experience in operational oceanography, long-term marine observations, and the deployment and management of ocean monitoring systems around the Maltese Islands and the wider region.

Within MEDJICARP, OMRG contributes its expertise in real-time coastal and open-sea monitoring. The group supports the development of a strengthened observing network across the eastern Mediterranean by sharing both know-how and observational data. As part of its activities, OMRG will provide measurements from high-frequency (HF) radar systems, which continuously monitor sea-surface currents, and from a recently deployed multiparametric buoy that records a range of physical and biogeochemical variables. Together, these instruments offer valuable insights into local circulation patterns, marine heatwaves, and coastal variability, which are essential for climate adaptation planning.

Expected results from our contribution include improving the accuracy of regional ocean forecasts, enhancing situational awareness for coastal risk preparation, and offering long-term datasets that can help detect and understand changing marine conditions. By working collaboratively within the MedJICARP consortium, we hope to support the development of robust, shared monitoring systems and contribute to stronger climate resilience planning for Mediterranean coastal communities.
