The Municipality of Genova is the local public authority governing one of the largest port cities in the Mediterranean and a key economic and maritime hub in Southern Europe. With a long-standing maritime, industrial and entrepreneurial tradition, the city plays a strategic role in connecting European and Mediterranean territories.

Through its Competitiveness and Ecological Transition Department, plays a strategic role in SHARE4MED, bringing strong expertise in urban governance, sustainable planning and Mediterranean cooperation.

As one of the first municipalities to sign the EU Mission Charter “Restore our Oceans and Waters” in 2022, Genova acts as a promoter of the Mayors’ Coalition for the Oceans Mission, fostering collaboration between Mediterranean cities and European institutions. Through this commitment, the Municipality supports local authorities in aligning their sustainability policies with the objectives of the EU Green Deal and the Mission Ocean framework.

Within SHARE4MED, Genova contributes through territorial analysis, pilot implementation and communication activities, ensuring that strategic planning translates into measurable local and Mediterranean-wide impact. The Municipality is responsible for defining the specifications of the Governance Dashboard, including the selection and clustering of key indicators (KPIs) to monitor progress towards Mission Ocean targets at both municipal and Mediterranean scale.

Genova’s long-standing experience in European cooperation strengthens this role. The city has participated in major EU-funded initiatives such as HUB-IN, Bauhaus of the Seas Sails, and the Partnership on Climate Adaptation, developing advanced competences in urban design, energy efficiency, nature-based solutions, stakeholder engagement, circular economy and economic development.

This experience is embedded in Genova 2050, the city’s long-term operational vision aligned with the European Green Deal and Europe’s Urban Agenda. The strategy works across three interconnected dimensions — innovative infrastructure (“Grey”), sustainable development (“Green”) and governance and skills (“Soft”) — contributing to six core urban qualities: liveability, development capacity, attractiveness, inclusiveness, sustainability and wellbeing.

With SHARE4MED, Genova reinforces its historic maritime identity while advancing a forward-looking model of Mediterranean cooperation — where cities become key actors in restoring marine ecosystems, strengthening blue economy strategies and ensuring that no community is left behind.
