Meet the academic partner of SHARE4MED in Algeria

The University of Science and Technology Oran Mohamed Boudiaf (USTO) in Oran will support the shared agenda, pilot actions on coastal habitat restoration, and act as a key interface with Algerian municipalities and local authorities.

Founded in 1971, the University of Science and Technology Oran Mohamed Boudiaf is one of the largest institutions for technological education and research in Algeria and a key academic reference for the Western Mediterranean region. Within SHARE4MED, USTO Oran participates through its research laboratory LSIM, which is directly involved in leading several scientific, technical and coordination activities of the project. 

In SHARE4MED, USTO Oran, through LSIM, plays a strategic role in supporting the definition of the project’s shared agenda and in the development of the pilot action on coastal habitat restoration. The University acts as a key interface with Algerian municipalities and local authorities, supporting the collection and analysis of local action plans and their alignment with the Mission Ocean Action Plan. It is also responsible for the development of the Algerian pilot and for liaising with major Mediterranean initiatives such as WESTMEDand the POWER4MED project, strengthening synergies across regional and international frameworks. 

USTOMB actively contributes to capacity building and knowledge exchange by organising, hosting and participating in study visits, fostering dialogue between academia, public institutions and project partners. 

The University is composed of seven faculties covering key technological fields including Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science, Natural Sciences (Biology and Biotechnology), Architecture and Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, as well as a Sports Institute. It counts nearly 26,000 registered students, supported by around 900 administrative staff and more than 1,200 teachers engaged in academic and research activities. 

USTO Oran offers 24 undergraduate and 44 postgraduate specialisations across a wide range of technological disciplines, with research conducted in 39 accredited laboratories, including LSIM. 

At international level, USTO Oran has signed numerous framework agreements and memorandums of understanding with national and international institutions and collaborates with around 40 universities worldwide. The University is also involved in several international projects, including long-standing cooperation initiatives with France and other European partners, reinforcing its strong commitment to international research and innovation networks.
