Turning sea data into knowledge for a safer Mediterranean.
The University of Palermo – Department of Engineering has long-standing and robust experience in both teaching and research in the field of marine observation. Since 2010, the team involved in the MedJICARP project has conducted continuous sea-state monitoring activities using HF radar systems.
Currently, the team manages the three HF radar antennas located on the Sicilian side of the CALYPSO system (https://www.facebook.com/CalypsoSouth/?locale=en_EN; https://www.facebook.com/progettoiwaveNET/). In collaboration with several Italian and Maltese institutions, the team has previously implemented multiple Interreg projects aimed at developing an innovative sea observation system capable of providing hourly information on wind waves and sea surface currents in the Malta Channel.
In addition, the team has strong expertise in hydrodynamic numerical modelling. Over the past 15 years, it has developed significant know-how in HF radar network management, data quality assessment, and the calibration and validation of hydrodynamic models through comparison with in situ observations.
Within the MedJICARP project, the UniPa team will share this experience with project partners to support the correct deployment and operation of new HF radar installations and to promote best practices. UniPa will also contribute to stakeholder engagement activities. Finally, in cooperation with ISPRA, UniPa will organize a summer/winter school aimed at training young researchers and PhD students in the above-mentioned methodologies.
