On 30 March 2026, we mark the International Day of Zero Waste (https://www.un.org/en/observances/zero-waste-day), a global observance that promotes sustainable consumption and production patterns, supports the shift toward circularity, and raises awareness of how zero-waste initiatives contribute to sustainable development. The day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in resolution 77/161 and is jointly facilitated by UNEP and UN-Habitat.

This year’s focus is on food waste. According to UNEP, the world wasted around 1 billion tonnes of food in 2022, nearly one-fifth of all food available to consumers. Food waste is not only a social and economic issue; it also wastes land, water and energy, while contributing significantly to climate and environmental pressures.

The message of the 2026 observance is simple and powerful: zero waste starts on your plate. Preventing food waste is one of the most immediate and practical ways to reduce emissions, protect natural resources, save money, and move towards a more circular and resilient economy.

On this International Day of Zero Waste, MEDWISE joins the global call for action by promoting resource efficiency, responsible consumption, and local solutions that reduce waste at source. Through its pilot actions, MEDWISE is turning ambition into action with three concrete solutions: decentralized composting, industrial symbiosis, and the new MEDWISE app. In particular, the MEDWISE app can play a key role in preventing food waste, engaging citizens, and boosting awareness of smarter, more sustainable everyday choices. From better planning and storage to reuse, redistribution and circular practices, every action matters in building more sustainable communities.

This 30 March, let us turn awareness into action. Reducing waste begins with everyday choices. Together, those choices can make a lasting difference.
