The BETA Technological Centre of the UVic‑UCC, partner of the MEDWISE project, held an institutional meeting with the mayor of Les Masies de Roda (Catalonia, Spain). This small municipality has become a local reference for decentralised community composting and separate door‑to‑door collection of the organic fraction. Over the past years, the municipality has put in place a system that combines selective collection at the household level with a network of community composting points close to where people live.

This decentralised approach allows Les Masies de Roda to manage municipal organic waste locally, produce compost for nearby green areas and gardens, and involve residents directly in closing the loop. The system is fully integrated into the municipality’s day‑to‑day waste‑management model and shows how small towns can move towards more circular and self‑sufficient solutions.

During the meeting, the municipality and the MEDWISE team discussed how the project can work with this existing system, not to replace it, but to follow its evolution more closely and provide technical support where useful. The conversation focused on practical aspects raised by the municipality itself, such as improving the closing and protection of some composters, refining how the quantities of organic waste introduced by households are recorded, and ensuring that daily operation remains convenient and user‑friendly for neighbours.

These first exchanges will help MEDWISE and Les Masies de Roda to agree on where monitoring efforts and small adjustments can bring added value, and how to translate everyday experience from the municipality into lessons that are meaningful for other Mediterranean territories. By working with a municipality that already operates a mature decentralised community composting system, MEDWISE gains a real‑world setting to understand how such solutions perform over time under real conditions.
