Municipalities across the Mediterranean face increasing pressure to modernize public services while responding to climate stress and limited resources. Cities now prioritize digital transformation to remain resilient, efficient and citizen oriented. SMARTMED supports this transition through practical implementation and structured governance reform.
The Interreg NEXT MED Programme funds SMARTMED for 36 months. The project upgrades municipal services and strengthens digital leadership across participating cities. Partners combine pilot actions, smart city testbeds and strategic planning into one coherent transformation framework.
SMARTMED introduces two Smart City applications that address critical municipal needs. The first application improves energy and environmental management through IoT monitoring of waste bin filling levels. The system optimizes collection routes in real time and increases operational efficiency. Municipalities reduce fuel consumption, lower costs and minimize environmental impact through data-driven decisions.
The second application strengthens workplace safety in demanding environments. Wearable IoT sensors monitor workers’ health conditions continuously. Machine learning tools analyze the collected data and detect early health risks. Municipal authorities gain actionable insights and improve preventive response capacity.
The Municipality of Deir Alla pilots both applications in Jordan. Project partners also demonstrate the solutions in Tunisia to encourage cross-border knowledge transfer. Cities across the Mediterranean can replicate and adapt these scalable solutions.
SMARTMED establishes two Smart City Testbeds in Kozani and Larisa in Greece. The testbeds showcase how Smart Energy and Smart Health technologies operate under real conditions. Project partners, local authorities and citizens explore practical digital tools firsthand. The testbeds generate measurable evidence of efficiency gains and sustainability improvements.
The project strengthens cooperation governance through structured collaboration. Networking workshops in Jordan and Tunisia bring together local officials, experts and stakeholders. Participants exchange best practices and develop joint approaches to digital transition. SMARTMED treats digital transformation as institutional reform rather than simple technological adoption.
