On 13 December 2025, the MedFireWise Project held a regional workshop in Ain Draham, north-western Tunisia, bringing together experts, public authorities, civil protection services, researchers, and local stakeholders to discuss practical ways to reduce wildfire risks, with a focus on silvopastoral practices.

As climate change continues to intensify wildfire risks across Mediterranean forest landscapes, the regional workshop emphasized the importance of integrating conventional firefighting measures with nature-based solutions (NBS). The discussions highlighted that the active participation of local communities is essential to building more resilient landscapes and strengthening long-term wildfire prevention efforts.

Participants exchanged experiences on how controlled grazing and traditional land-use practices can help reduce flammable vegetation, slow the spread of fires, and support healthier forest ecosystems. These approaches were discussed through their social and economic benefits, including support for rural livelihoods and the preservation of local knowledge.

Through interactive group discussions, participants identified key challenges, assessed current preparedness, and explored priority actions in and around forests. Local perspectives played a central role throughout the day, ensuring that future actions reflect community needs and on-the-ground realities.

The workshop concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen cooperation between authorities, experts, and communities, reinforcing MedFireWise’s goal of building more fire-resilient Mediterranean landscapes through collaboration and shared learning.
