From science to action: MedFireWise partners met in Barcelona to align progress and define the next steps in wildfire prevention across the Mediterranean.
In March 2026, MedFireWise partners gathered in Barcelona for a consortium meeting focused on one key objective: aligning progress and coordinating the next steps of the project’s implementation across the Mediterranean.
Over two days, discussions moved beyond general updates to focus on how solutions are being prepared, tested, and scaled across the pilot regions. Each partner shared concrete progress, helping to clarify what is already in motion — and what comes next.
A key focus was on how wildfire risk is analysed and anticipated. Partners presented ongoing work on fire behaviour modelling, including how factors such as vegetation density, terrain, and weather conditions influence fire spread. These tools are being used to identify high-risk zones and strategic intervention areas, allowing prevention efforts to be more targeted and effective.
At the same time, the meeting provided detailed updates on the implementation of Nature-based Solutions on the ground. Across the pilot regions, partners are preparing and applying practices such as silvopastoral systems and prescribed burning, adapting them to local ecosystems and regulatory frameworks. These interventions are supported by specific planning steps, including site selection, environmental assessments, and the definition of operational guidelines before implementation.
Another key outcome of the meeting was the advancement of cross-regional collaboration. Partners are now working on joint knowledge exchange activities, designed to connect pilot regions and share practical experience. These exchanges will allow tested solutions in one area to inform actions in another, strengthening the project’s overall impact.
Beyond the technical progress, the meeting played an essential role in fine-tuning coordination between partners. By aligning timelines, responsibilities, and methodologies, the consortium defined a clearer path for the next phase of implementation — ensuring that scientific tools, field interventions, and community engagement move forward in a coordinated way.
The Barcelona meeting confirmed that MedFireWise is moving into a more operational phase: where knowledge is not only produced, but actively translated into solutions on the ground.
🤝 A special thank you to the Pau Costa Foundation, Spanish partner of MedFireWise, for organising the meeting, and to the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) for hosting the consortium in Barcelona.
