A Focus Group meeting held in Beirut on 3 February 2026 explored Nature-Based Solutions for fire risk reduction in forests and rangelands in Lebanon.
MedFireWise brought wildfire risk reduction into focus in Beirut on 3 February 2026, during a dedicated Focus Group on Nature-Based Solutions for forests and rangelands in Lebanon.
Organised by the University of Balamand, Lebanese partner of MedFireWise, in collaboration with the Lebanon Reforestation Initiative, the meeting connected national authorities, operational services, and experts working directly on wildfire management and forest health.
The discussion centred on prescribed burning and controlled silvopasture, examining what it takes to move these approaches from theory to practice — including feasibility, institutional readiness, operational constraints, and expected benefits.
Introduced by Dr. George Mitri, Director of the Land and Natural Resources Program at the University of Balamand, the session also opened space for a targeted exchange on urgent forest health challenges in Lebanon, facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture with contributions from academic experts.
By grounding the conversation in real case studies and local experience, the meeting supported the identification of workable and accepted solutions for reducing wildfire risk in the Lebanese context.
