Martin Heibel, Communication Manager of Interreg NEXT MED, highlights how this EU-funded programme unites 15 countries to tackle shared challenges and create lasting impact. From fostering innovation and SME growth to supporting climate action and skills development, Interreg NEXT MED is shaping a more resilient Mediterranean. Find out more about the programme’s initiatives and opportunities for young people in the following interview with Martin Heibel.

What is the programme about and what impact does it aim to achieve?
Interreg NEXT MED is the largest EU-funded transnational cooperation programme in the Mediterranean, uniting 15 countries to address shared regional challenges. Since 2007, it has funded over 170 projects, fostering partnerships between public and private organisations to enhance innovation, SME competitiveness, energy efficiency, water management, climate action, skills development, healthcare, and governance. Through this, we have empowered hundreds of individuals—young entrepreneurs, women in rural areas, and students—while strengthening communities. Interreg NEXT MED strives to create a resilient, prosperous, and connected Mediterranean for lasting positive change.

What activities, initiatives or opportunities for participation should young people know about?
Young people should be more than just beneficiaries — they must be key players in Euro-Mediterranean co-operation. That is why our calls for proposals often include specific funding for young people. Our projects offer valuable opportunities, from skills training and mentoring to business incubation and mobility exchanges. They also create job vacancies. That’s why we encourage young graduates to search for vacancies at www.interregnextmed.eu. Most importantly, young people can connect with like-minded peers from the Mediterranean to foster networks and lasting collaborations — one of our key objectives.

What advice do you wish you had received when you were 20?
Opportunities are everywhere. Embrace cultural diversity and build meaningful connections with people who challenge, inspire, and guide you. Listen, learn, and grow from their experiences: every conversation is a chance to move forward!
