Waste management is an issue that affects every community, touching public health, environmental sustainability, and economic development. In the Mediterranean region, there are many challenges to overcome with waste collection, recycling and prevention, and municipal solid and food waste management. Through the Gov4GreenMed project, Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, the Turkish partner, is implementing a pilot action in Finike that brings together municipal waste management, sustainable agriculture and participatory governance.
Finike, a coastal municipality located on the south-west of Antalya, will support the transformation of municipal organic waste into organic soil improvers (soil amendments) and will explore their application in local agricultural fields, contributing to healthier soils and more sustainable practices. At the same time, the pilot builds on the already operational Eco-Friendly Farmer Card (EFFC), which is a voluntary incentive and engagement program for farmers. They participate in environmentally responsible actions such as the proper collection and recovery of pesticide packaging waste and improved waste separation behaviours. At the same time, they gain training, certification and benefits or rewards.
The pilot will develop training activities for farmers, women farmers, and students that will focus on waste separation at source, environmentally friendly agricultural practices, and the protection of soil and water resources.
A key component of the pilot is the activation of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality’s Environmental Board, a multi-stakeholder platform bringing together municipalities, agricultural institutions, cooperatives and community representatives. This platform supports coordination, knowledge sharing and the integration of additional environmental solutions over time.
The Gov4GreenMed project, aims to address the challenges faced by the municipality of Finike in Türkiye, as well as other municipalities in Spain, Italy, Jordan, and Tunisia. The project seeks to foster effective cooperation between local authorities and various stakeholders and to strengthen local governance models. Its goal is to support the implementation of shared public services, enhance citizens’ quality of life, and promote the green transition of Mediterranean municipalities.
