Managing waste is a critical issue affecting all communities, with direct implications for public health, environmental protection, and local economies. In the Mediterranean region, these challenges are especially pronounced, including difficulties in waste collection, recycling, prevention, and the handling of municipal solid and food waste.

Ein Al-Basha, a municipality located 20 km from located northwest of the capital, Amman, faces multiple solid waste management challenges. This includes limited vehicle capacity, poor data and law enforcement, no waste separation at source, lack of budget and performance indicators, high machinery costs, difficult terrain, and a dumpsite on steep land.

Thanks to the project Gov4GreenMed under the Interreg NEXT MED program, the town now aims to improve waste services by reducing landfill waste through source separation. Ein Al-Basha will also sell recyclables, lower maintenance costs, and extend landfill lifespan, supported by a transfer station for efficient collection and cleaning. It will enhance community participation by involving schools, households, and businesses in awareness campaigns, while increasing public understanding of sorting practices and their environmental benefits. Finally, the program generates valuable data to develop best practices and a replicable model for other Jordanian municipalities, attracting donors, private sector partners, and investors.

Ein Al-Basha municipality operates under a governance model that collaborates with an advisory board and includes limited stakeholder engagement. The Gov4GreenMed project will focus on enhancing and promoting the participation of local communities and stakeholders in the municipality’s action plans and pilot activities. This will strengthen the participatory approach and community ownership of the selected pilots, helping to ensure successful and sustainable results.

The project Gov4GreenMed will address the challenges faced by Ein Al-Basha, as well as those encountered by the pilot municipalities involved in the project in Spain, Italy, Jordan, and Türkiye. All in all, the project will support the implementation of shared public services, improve citizens’ quality of life, and promote the green transition of Mediterranean municipalities.
