ENEA (the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) presented the potential of industrial symbiosis for the valorization of organic waste produced by the agro-industrial supply chain at Frutech, the agriculture and agri-food expo held in Catania, Italy, from November 27-29, 2025, within a workshop organized by the University of Catania.

It was an important opportunity to meet stakeholders and lay the groundwork for upcoming stakeholder engagement activities preparatory to the implementation of the industrial symbiosis pilot activities envisioned by the MEDWISE project.

The production of organic waste in the agro-industrial supply chain is massive and represents both a management challenge and an opportunity for the circular economy, transforming waste into valuable resources. In this context, industrial symbiosis helps prevent waste production by identifying concrete opportunities to reuse such waste in other production processes within a specific geographical or production context. The active and participatory involvement of all the actors in the supply chain and of the potential users in a territory constitutes an indispensable prerequisite for the concrete applications of industrial symbiosis.
