We’re thrilled to share that Aqaba in Jordan has been nominated as one of the top six ‘Green Destinations’ globally in the Environment and Climate category. What sets Aqaba apart is its adherence to fifteen core criteria of the sustainable destination standard, placing it among the Top 100 global green destinations. Since 2007, Aqaba hosts – Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority – the Programme Branch Office for the Eastern Mediterranean area, contributing to dissemination of funding opportunities and awareness-raising of stakeholders in Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Türkiye.
This recognition was earned by presenting a compelling success story about the Aqaba Bird Observatory in collaboration with the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. This environmental tourism gem boasts rich biodiversity achieved through innovative water reuse practices in a region grappling with global water scarcity.
Spearheaded by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority in Jordan, this initiative encapsulates the spirit of reconciliation with nature, embodied by the Aqaba Bird Observatory.
The culmination of this journey is set to take place on March 6th, 2024, at ITB Berlin, the world’s largest travel trade fair, where an international jury of sustainable tourism experts will announce the final three award winners.
As Aqaba continues to chart new frontiers in sustainable tourism, its recognition as a global Green Destination serves as an inspiration for destinations worldwide. By embracing reconciliation with nature and prioritizing environmental conservation, Aqaba sets a standard of excellence that redefines the future of tourism—one that harmonizes with nature and leaves a positive impact for generations to come.
