On 25 February 2026, the first Spanish workshop of the DIEM project took place in Valencia, organised and hosted by the Instituto de Restauración del Patrimonio (IRP) of the Universitat Politècnica de València (PP3) at the Ciudad Politécnica de la Innovación.
The event brought together representatives from public authorities, universities, museums, NGOs and private companies to discuss the skills needs and professional profiles required in the Cultural Heritage sector. The workshop forms part of the DIEM project activities aimed to contribute to the development of a shared training system for cultural heritage management across the Mediterranean region.
Through questionnaires, interactive discussions and round-table debates, participants reflected on how educational programmes and professional training can better respond to the evolving needs of the sector. Particular attention was given to the alignment between academic training, institutional capacities and labour market demands.
The workshop involved a broad network of stakeholders from regional institutions, universities, museums, NGOs and companies working in the fields of heritage conservation, cultural management and tourism. Among the invited representatives from the Generalitat Valenciana were Olimpia Ferreiro Chicote (Cultural Heritage and Museums Service, Subdirectora general de Patrimonio Cultural y Museos,), Lourdes Sanchís Domingo (Deputy Directorate General for International Development Cooperation, Subdirectora general de Cooperación Internacional al Desarrollo), Manolo García Valls (Deputy Directorate General for International Development Cooperation, Jefe de Servicio de Análisis), José Manuel Camarero Benítez (Regional Secretariat of Tourism, Secretario autonómico de Turismo).
Representatives from academic institutions included Pedro Fuentes Durá (Director of the IDC Corporate Chair in Innovation, Design and Interculturality, Universitat Politècnica de València), José Marín-Roig Ramón (Director of the O-City Corporate Chair, Universitat Politècnica de València), and L. Nuria Ramón Marqués (Director of the Museus Corporate Chair and the Master’s in Cultural Management, Universitat Politècnica de València).
Participants from museums and cultural institutions included Josep Albert Cortés i Garrido (Manager of the Foundation of the MARQ Archaeological Museum of Alicante), María Jesús de Pedro Michó (Director at the Museum of Prehistory of Valencia), and Pilar Vidal Monferrer (Director of the Valltorta Museum). Civil society organisations were represented by Lourdes Mirón Mirón (Valencian Coordinator of Oxfam Intermón) and representatives from the private sector including Javier Leache Aristu (President of ARESPA – Spanish Association of Companies for the Restoration of Historical Heritage), Inés Cámara (Estudios y Métodos de la Restauración – EMR), Jordi Diaz (CEO of Play&go Experience), Eva Martínez (Via Heraclia – Promoción del Patrimonio y Turismo Cultural) and Teresa Boix Yago (Feets Project Management).
The afternoon sessions continued with thematic discussions on the training profile of the DIEM target groups, the structure of transversal and local training modules, and the design of future training workshops to be implemented within the project. The workshop concluded with a final round table summarising the main insights and recommendations that emerged from the discussions. These contributions will feed into the development of the DIEM training framework and educational modules, ensuring that the programme addresses the real needs identified by stakeholders in the Cultural Heritage sector.
