Waste management poses a major challenge for communities worldwide, affecting public health, environmental protection, and economic growth. In the Mediterranean region, these difficulties are especially evident in areas such as waste collection, recycling systems, prevention efforts, and the handling of municipal solid and food waste.

Scandicci, a municipality located within the Metropolitan City of Florence (Tuscany) in Italy, will address several challenges within the context of the Gov4GreenMed project.

The town will develop a local Food Plan for the municipality to strengthen cooperation between farmers, schools, public authorities, and civil society. Scandicci will carry out education and awareness activities in schools and public spaces, while supporting participatory governance and capacity building among local stakeholders. As a pilot initiative, the Scandicci experience aims to serve as a model for other municipalities in Tuscany and, in the long term, to reinforce the ecological, cultural, and agricultural foundations of the territory. The town aims to contribute to biodiversity events, educational farming activities, and the future Scandicci Urban Biodiversity Park.

The Gov4GreenMed project aims to address the challenges faced by the municipality of Scandicci in Italy, as well as other municipalities in Spain, Jordan, Türkiye and Tunisia. The project seeks to foster effective cooperation between local authorities and various stakeholders and to strengthen local governance models. Its goal is to support the implementation of shared public services, enhance citizens’ quality of life, and promote the green transition of Mediterranean municipalities.
