Food waste represents one of the main environmental, economic, and social challenges worldwide. In the Mediterranean area, waste management still faces significant critical issues.

The Italian National Food Waste Prevention Day is celebrated on 5 February (in 2026, it will be the 13th edition). Established to raise awareness among citizens, institutions, and businesses about the environmental and economic impact of wasted food, the initiative is promoted by the Spreco Zero campaign and aims to reduce food waste in line with the 2030 Agenda, encouraging sustainable habits and the reuse of food. More information can be found here.

On this important day, the MEDWISE project highlights its role in promoting replicable solutions for sustainable organic waste management across the Mediterranean. Among them, an AI-based mobile tool, the MEDWISE APP, will be piloted. Its functionalities will include food management, smart recipes, waste prevention, and social features.

Through innovative solutions, MEDWISE not only limits waste generation but also enhances resource efficiency, supports environmental protection, and fosters a circular economy through cross-border cooperation.
