The Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) has begun implementing the Mediterranean Waste Innovations for Sustainable Environments (MEDWISE) project as of July 2025.
During its pilot activities in Lebanon, MEDWISE is expected to deliver a functional decentralized composting model integrated into the SWMIS platform, support capacity building for municipalities and professionals, and enhance regional cooperation through structured knowledge exchange. The project will also contribute to evidence-based policy recommendations that support the integration of circular economy approaches into national and regional frameworks. As a first project activity, the ESDU team conducted a technical visit on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, to the Be Clean facility in Bekfaya, Lebanon. The visit included a comprehensive assessment of the sorting and composting operations, covering equipment condition, safety practices, environmental controls, and priority maintenance requirements, with findings documented in a detailed technical report.
Through MEDWISE, ESDU continues to advance AUB’s commitment to applied research, innovation, and regional leadership in sustainable development.
