Established in 1977, is a Lebanese public research institute
The National Center for Marine Sciences – National Council for Scientific Research, Lebanon, established in 1977, is a public research institute recognized within the Mediterranean network of marine centers and is integrated in several regional and international activities. Research activities at the center focus on the (i) Monitoring of the coastal zone by creating a national observation network, modeling the cycles of contaminants and using bio indicators; (ii) Evaluation of specific diversity by characterizing the living communities more particularly the migratory species and their habitats; (iii) Production and transfer of matter in the coastal and marine ecosystems; (iv) Fishery stock evaluation; (v) Assessing the climate change impact on marine environment and increasing the resilience of coastal community. Within this framework, the actual skills existing in the center cover the following aspects: Operational and physical oceanography, hydrological and hydrobiological parameters, marine biology, primary and secondary production and biodiversity, marine water and sediment chemistry and bacteriological contamination.
The specific role of the CNRS-L in the MEDJICARP project is to be part in the setting-up of a pilot, multi-platform cost effective observing system in the eastern Mediterranean by facilitating the acquirement and the installation of the HF radar on the Lebanese coast as well as to manage its operation and insuring the smooth streaming of the acquired data.
