The SMARTMED Project officially kicked off on Thursday, 25 September 2025, with a launch meeting at JOIST Innovation Park in Larissa, Greece. Partners, stakeholders and experts from across the Mediterranean came together to set the foundations for a three-year cooperation aimed at driving the digital transition of Mediterranean cities and supporting their transformation into smart, sustainable and people-centered urban environments.
Co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, SMARTMED is coordinated by the University of Western Macedonia (UOWM, Greece) with partners the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development (iED, Greece), the Municipality of Deir Alla (Jordan) and BUSINESSMED (Tunisia). With a budget of €1.133.180, the project is supported by an EU contribution of €1.008.530,20 (89%) and co-financing of €124.694,80 (11%).
The programme mission is to finance cooperation projects that address joint socio-economic, environmental and governance challenges at Mediterranean level. SMART-MED-CITIES (SMARTMED) promotes innovative, people-centered solutions to enhance infrastructure and services, boost competitiveness, foster citizen participation and strengthen digital skills. To achieve these goals, SMARTMED will establish two local hubs and an online platform for good practices and strategies, provide training for city executives in smart city tools related to energy, environment and health, mentor municipalities in their transformation, pilot applications in key sectors and implement transnational networking tools and advisory services.
Beneficiaries include both local authorities and citizens. Administrations will gain knowledge, tools and support to advance their smart city agendas, while citizens will benefit directly from better services and improved quality of life.
