We are happy to welcome our first Interreg Volunteer Youth (IVY) of the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, in our Branch Office for the Western Mediterranean located in Valencia. Over the next six months, Alicia will be working with us in the communication unit to increase the visibility of Mediterranean cooperation among young people and promote their involvement in the programme.

Tell us a bit more about yourself!

Growing up in Spain with Romanian origins sparked my interest in international cooperation from a young age. However, a defining moment in both my personal and professional life was my experience as an intern at the Spanish Embassy in Tunisia. It was then that I realized that I wanted to dedicate myself to enhancing collaboration between Europe and its Southern and Eastern neighboring regions.

What motivated you to become an IVY Reporter in Interreg NEXT MED?

After finishing my Master’s degree in International Relations, focusing on Europe and the Middle East, I felt disconnected from real-world action. While my academic journey was really valuable, I was looking forward to learning more practical skills and tangible ways to contribute to regional cooperation. So, when the opportunity to become an IVY reporter in Interreg NEXT MED appeared, I didn’t hesitate and I applied! I believe IVY is an amazing initiative to actively engage young people in European cooperation.

What are your expectations for the next six months?

In the upcoming months, I aim to learn valuable knowledge and skills from experienced professionals in the field. At the same time, I am motivated to contribute as much as possible to the programme’s mission of fostering transnational cooperation for a more prosperous Mediterranean. Specifically, I hope to make the programme more accessible and empowering for Mediterranean youth, who I believe to be a central component of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and a driving force for positive change.

My first weeks have already been really rewarding. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in this fascinating programme and take part in building a more collaborative Mediterranean, which remains crucial in the complicated times we are living through.

If you are a young person interested in the region and the programme’s actions, I encourage you to check out Interreg NEXT MED’s website and stay tuned for future updates! I would also motivate everyone passionate in international cooperation to consider becoming an IVY – it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
